The sky above the roof (Paul Verlaine 1844-1896)
The sky above the roof.
So blue, so calm!
A tree, above the roof.
Rocks its palm.
The bell in the sky over there.
Softly rings.
A bird in the tree over there.
Plaintively sings.
My God, my God. Life is there
Simple and quiet.
That peaceful murmur there. Just
The city.
What have you done.
O you that here.
Crying incessantly.
Say, what hast thou done.
Thee there.
From your youth? .
