Born inKunming, China, Chen Dehong received his training at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. In the very beginning of China’s opening up, he passed a competitive examination for a scholarship to study art abroad and arrived in Paris in 1982 to study at the Beaux Arts, He continues to live and work in Paris.

DEHONG combines Chinese and Western techniques of painting in a highly individualistic style. His paintings are often inspired by the pictographic but abstract forms of Chinese characters. His brush work is full of vitality and movement. With a broad brush, he transformed the ideographs from mere means of communication to highly expressive imagery. He chooses different mediums and materials to fit his needs. He also enjoys practising Chineses calligraphy in various ways.
His work has been exhibited widely in France, Germany, England, Holland, Hong Kong and the United States. Many of his works can be seen in books written by French writer P. Aroneanu, such as «Le Maitre des Signes », » L'Empereur et l'Immortel. and » La Grande Muraille des Caractères »
