Medalist Bertrand Andrieu:
Bertrand Andrieu is one of the best medalist, writer and illustrator of his time. He learned his trade with the medalist Andre Lavau then entered the Academy of Painting and Sculpture of Bordeaux. In 1786 he moved to Paris and entered the studio of the sculptor and medalist Nicolas-Marie Gatteaux (1751-1832). His first big success was a great Medal of superbly crafted Storming of the Bastille in 1789. The following year he made another medal to success: The Arrival of Louis XVI in Paris. In the second part of the Revolution Medal of production declined, Andrieu then created the illustrations engraved for the edition of Virgil by Firmin Didot (1764-1836). He made his return in 1800 with two famous medals: The Passage du Grand St. Bernard and The Battle of Marengo. Its elegant and highly admired Peace of Luneville (1801) enabled him to receive many orders from the Director General of the Museum Central des Arts, then Napoleon Museum, the Louvre Dominique Vivant Denon (1747-1825) in particular medal commemorating the Battle of Austerlitz, The Battle of Jena, The Marriage of Jerome Bonaparte and The Marriage of Napoleon and the Archduchess Marie Louise. His portraits of Napoleon medal commissioned by Vivant Denon to commemorate the great events of the reign of Napoleon, had an immense success. Andrieu remained in favor during the Restoration in 1818 with the creation of a medal commemorating the erection of the statue of Henri IV on the Pont-Neuf and a medal for the 1820-1821 Birth of the Duc de Bordeaux, who was paying him 15.000 francs by the city of Paris and earned him a decoration of the Order of St. Michael by King Louis XVIII.
The Battle of Marengo Battle of Marengo
Was a major commitment of the French Revolution. It took place June 14.1800 in the village of Marengo in Piedmont, northern Italy. Determined to expel the Austrians from positions they had recently taken in Lombardy and Piedmont, Napoleon Bonaparte gathered an army at Dijon and crossed the border into Italy via the Col du Grand St. Bernard. An attack by the Austrians led by Michael Baron Melas (1729-1806) taken by surprise at Marengo Bonaparte. A French defeat seemed imminent until a division led by General Desaix could return in time to lead a successful attack-cons. The French lost about 5.800 men, the Austrians 9400.
By beating the Austrian army at Marengo, the First Consul led by a convention signed at Alexandria, to evacuate the Liguria, Piedmont and Lombardy. Restoring the Cisalpine Republic, Napoleon drew from this win great political advantage he knew endorse all the glory. Upon his return he was greeted triumphantly in Paris, gaining popularity over other members of the Consulate.
We still needed to complete this campaign and force Austria, who procrastinated, peace. Although the crucial importance of the Battle of Hohenlinden Moreau won by the Austrians in December, was overshadowed by the genius of the operation of the First Consul in Italy, it is she who forced the imperialists to sign an armistice and Peace of Luneville February 9.1801.
