18Th Century Amsterdam so-called bootjesketting gold necklace with garnets… We have no clue why a bootjesketting is called a bootjesketting. Bootjesketting is Dutch and translated to English it would be something like «chain of little boats». One thing is sure and that the bootjesketting is part of the typical Dutch jewelry heritage. Some descriptions in museums describe this as typical for the northern Dutch provinces Groningen and Friesland. We have strong doubts that this is the case because besides this example made in Amsterdam in the Eighteenth Century there is also an example of one made in Rotterdam and can be found in the collection of Museum Rotterdam.

Today most of the Bootjeskettings found are made in 19th Century or even 20th Century. It is extremely rare to find one of the 18th Century.

Details:

Country of origin: Netherlands, Amsterdam

Era: Rococo (less commonly roccoco) also referred to as «Late Baroque» is an 18th century Era which developed as Baroque artists gave up their symmetry and became increasingly more ornate, florid, and playful. Rococo rooms were designed as total works of art with elegant and ornate furniture, small sculptures, ornamental mirrors, and tapestry complementing architecture, reliefs, and wall paintings. It was largely supplanted by the Neoclassic Era. In 1835 the Dictionary of the French Academy stated that the word Rococo «usually covers the kind of ornament, Era and design associated with Louis XV's reign and the beginning of that of Louis xvi». It includes therefore, all types of art produced around the middle of the 18th century in France.

Period: ca. 1770

Condition: very good condition - The back of the necklace seems to be in a very wrinkled condition but we recognise this as only normal for an old bootjesketting.
