Wanted to express the warmth of the wintry colours, whilst feeling freezingly cold. Some history here as it is one of the finest examples of a Cistercian Abbey though obscured somewhat by being for some time on the edge of an urban and heavily industrialised part of Leeds. The de Lacys-b rutal Norman conquerors by a paradox of history endowed the land to the monks and this was one of the first northern English sites that Turner painted on a rainy day 200 years before me!
I love the sensation of old carved stone and the romance of such ruins that Shakespeare so well described;'Bare, ruin'd Choirs-where late the sweet birds sang. '
