En 1835 su familia se traslada desde Bruselas a España, donde Carlos inicia su formación como discipulo de Juan de la Cruz. En 1850 decide continuar sus estudios en su tierra natal, aprendendo con los grandes paisajistas flamencos. Allí trabaja con el paisajista Joseph Quinaux que le introduce en la pintura al aire libre. Vuelve a España y obtiene la cátedra como profesor de Bellas Artes, formando a toda una generación de paisajistas en el exercicio al aire libre.
