Un Amérindien, ou Indien d'Amérique, est un des premiers occupants du continent américain ou un de leurs descendants. En 1492, l’explorateur Christophe Colomb pense avoir atteint le sous-continent indien, alors qu’il vient de débarquer en Amérique. C'est dans ce contexte que les Européens nommeront brièvement ce territoire les Indes occidentales, pour les différencier de celles dites orientales. À cause de cette confusion, on continue d’utiliser le mot « Indiens » pour parler des populations du Nouveau Monde
