Sannyasin means in the tradition of Sanatana Dharma, a man (or woman) who received sannyasa diksha from his spiritual master (Guru) who chairs the initiation ceremony of his monastic lineage, officiated by a Brahmin (priest) During ceremony before the sacred fire Agni the Guru gives the monastic name (Swami Shivananda Saraswati for example the title is usually followed by the name of the line and then) to the novice as well as its attributes are: the danda (the pilgrim's staff), the kamandalu (the pitcher), the kaupīnam (strip of cloth that serves as a slip) and the kavi (orange dress) the ceremony ends with the chanting of gayatri mantra.
