Since the origin of the pilgrimage of Saint Jacques de Compostela (Santiago de Compostela in Spanish), pilgrims have borrowed the lines of communication to all other travelers. Except close to shrines, there was not, strictly speaking Pilgrimage specific.
This is from 1882, with the printing of the last book of the Codex Calixtinus collection made in the twelfth century, that has spread the notion of Pilgrimage.
