General Condition:
Recto: The media is not rectangular, but quickly cut and giving a trapezoidal shape. Various discrete traces of old folds, or dirt (to blur). The pen drawing (sepia? ), End or very late, is clearly visible except perhaps on the fleece of the satyr and his legs.
Verso: Former brand adhesive binder at the rear of the amphora (3 mm). Old mark the vertical center crease. Two former reinforcements at the corners. Two stamp collector and a pellet of the Parisian gallery «Decour, bearing the number 456.
Watermark: bunch of grapes above initials (illegible). Rag paper, laid approximately 21 mm.
Study: The design takes full height of the media present. A faun is convicted of hides to carry a flagon without handles - feet of satire and the base to ensure grip. It might be more a wine decanter, whose belly is glass. The rest of the project indicates the metal, bronze or precious metal loaded decorative motifs and beads (or glass). In a cartridge, the base is decorated with an allegory (the passing of time? ). With Bacchus totally naked (more than a putto) lying in a landscape, distantly fortified, he leans on the sinister human bones while seeming defiance of an hourglass look.
It seems that this project rattachât to the Flemish school, or more specifically Antwerp, but more to the school of Fontaine-Bleau, specifically to Delaune. The thin and safe and density may be attributed to Etienne Delaune (c. 1518 -? 1583). Drawings are comparable in the collection of Her Royal Highness of England (Windsor), and the Louvre.
Note: It appears to the left of the database is a monogram, a large fruit, but it is difficult to interpret.
Ps: The picture below does not reflect the condition of the paper nor the quality of design, both much better.
