Note: This is from the suite “Heroides d’Ovide” and illustrates one of the earliest works of the Roman poet who was alive in the time of the emperor Augustus. The work consists of fictional letters by women to famous men who have abandoned them. They refer to personalities such as Penelope who believed she had been left by Odysius, Phyllis who was abandoned by one of the sons of Theseus and Dido who had been abandoned by Aeneas. Derain illustrates two of these abandoned women in these fine engravings.
