Slave ship. Reproduction of a «socarrat» del 15th century. Lola Manaut Roser Nou
During the 15th century, it arises in the Valencian towns of Paterna and Manises, an important production of ornamentation of bricks and tiles, called «socarrats», intended to cover the coffered ceilings or roofs, porches covers…
These bricks are made in a single color, iron oxide, either combining it with black color, and decorated with black polymer clay and ochre, without vitrification.
The decoration of this type of pottery is very simple and geometric when used in humble constructions, and lavishly ornamented when it goes to the noble rooms of the House.
They are decorated with stylized images of flora and fauna, boats, as well as human figures, with a peculiar spelling typically Gothic and genuinely Valencian.
Many originals of these works can be seen in the Museum of the Marquis of Dos Aguas, Valencia.
