A unique Austrian Bidermeier gilt bronze mounted mahogany, fruitwood and ebonised table piano signed Sebastain Kober. The hinged top mounted at the reverse with a mirror in an ebonised frame and opening to a small keyboard and a velvet covered plateau with seven various mother-of-pearl, gilt-bronze and cut-glass objects.
The Biedermeier period extends from 1815 (Congress of Vienna) to 1848 (beginning of the Revolution of 1848-1849) in the states of the Germanic and Austria Confederation. In politics, it is linked to the German Restoration and development of these states after the Napoleonic period and the Congress of Vienna.
The term Biedermeier refers to one part at the culture and bourgeois art appeared at that time, and other part from the literature of that time. The restriction of freedoms and also a certain defiance against the political action lead to a recesse of artists to privacy family and home. The evasion in the romance and privacy are therefore typical themes. Already the poet John Paul spoke of «total happiness in limiting».
Biedermeier furniture, although they do not have homogenous style, are reconizable by an understated elegance. They are not intended to impress, but to contribute to a feeling of comfort and above all must be functional. The first furniture style was created in Vienna, taking their inspiration from English furniture. Considering the importance and value given to handcrafted furniture typical Biedermeier are rather small pieces, such as chests, secretaries or sewing table.
