Baule Bas-relief

This is the reproduction of a delicately sculpted 19th-century bas-relief from the Ivory Coast.
Old Baule dwellings, built on a rectangular plan with a roof made of thick layers of thatch, often had sculpted doors and shutters painted with natural pigments, the main ones being white clay and several varieties of ochre. This low relief portrays the mask of an ancestor or chief of lineage.
