Initiated as of the Directory in the form of engravings or of small objects, the image of Napoleon was conveyed under the Empire with very many specimens in all the layers of the society. If the Second Empire took again on its account official propaganda, the fall of the mode in 1870 put in sleep for twenty years the image of Napoleon. The awakening had to be awaited national feeling in the years 1890 to see reappearing the image of the hero who had so often overcome the Prussians.
