Self-portrait in pastel by Paul Gauguin.
This self-portrait is done on a medium characteristic of his era. By pre-twist board (see the similarity to the technique of concrete pre-constraints), the film is put on paper his «framework» contorted, and affixed with a glue, envelope dries and presses the «framework» the four corners statements. The result is a vacuum space between the four corners in favor of better insulation and surface œuvrée tight against his back support, showcased on the damp walls. This technique of manufacturing materials «ready-to-draw / ready-to-framing / ready-to-hang» is very common in the last third of the nineteenth century in Paris until the war of 1914-18. Very effective media «to draw», but also the lithographs from the early nineteenth, if not earlier, so we can explain the excellent preservation of works, without more than a hundred years after design of any «pecking / picket» by fungi of the paper.

The mere fact of this preparation technique and medium of pastel is in itself a guarantee of authenticity from the media, except seniority drawing. The «board» in its origin, was fitted with a system of interlocking metal. The label on the store offering this type of support is still partially visible on the back of the cardboard top, middle, unfortunately, largely hidden by old collages. A clever take-off would give us the name of the store, then we referring perhaps to a generation older than a century that made use Gauguin (re-use there a lithographic printing old? The radiography say).

State:
Despite appearances, not very good. On the whole vertical left border, scratches attest clashes caused by the fracture and collapse of a glass surface. Bruises do not necessarily pierced the pictorial support, the latter not only makes it easier Restoration / Renovation, pastel.
The back, a stamp collector.

Miscellaneous comments:
H = 45.7, l = 37.7cm. Paint layer virtually empty, except on the left upright, and aside from the dust. (Note: The tones of the photograph attached is not exactly consistent with the authentic tones).

Not signed. The re-connoisseurs know right away the profile and the traits of Paul Gauguin, and a synthetic & pontavéniste to look like many self-portraits, which, better than other techniques, pastel served its interests.
Some considerations, this Pastel has an area of the Brittany coast that attended Paul Gauguin, no one has the «scientifically» established yet. It is possible that the thug has paid ever broke his stay with a beautiful shot of a pastel or two by way of goodbye.

Ps Coming soon: a sticker on timber (unsigned) and a nabi color aquatint, signed, (Saint-Lunaire), two pencil drawings of girls Brittany, headers, the same Gauguin.
