Note: This drawing of boats depicts the harbour at Rouen and is related to another drawing of this subject : “Study of the Port of Rouen” (Bretell & Lloyd 283) of which an image is included in the sale for reference purposes. This study served as a preparatory drawing for an etching entitled “Le Port pres de la douane a Rouen made in 1883 (See Delteil 43). Pissarro made a second print in 1885 “Port de Rouen (Delteil 56) which is a development of Delteil 43. Pissarro adapted the same composition for a fan in 1885 (Pissarro & Venturi 1663). Dr Pissarro believes our drawing to be one of the sketches that the artist made of the subject.

Authenticity: We have a letter from Dr Joachim Pissarro which authenticates the work. It will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonee of the artists Works on Paper
