I have always rather admired Camille Pissarro who was one of the most notable of the French Impressionists. He had an interesting life and was much concerned with the political issues of his day. His rather strange appearance - the long shaggy beard and wizened face -rather belied his great energy, ambition and ability as an artist.
He was born in St Thomas (Now in the us Virgin Islands) and he became the only artist to make contributions to Impressionism and Post Impressionism. He laster worked alongside Surat and Signac when, at the age of 54 he took up the Neo-Impressionist style. He was idolised by his fellow painters as a very wise, kind hearted and generous friend.
His etchings are of especial note. The quality of the work is wonderful and he was extremely prolific too.
We have recently acquired a very rare and fine example of this notable artists works:
Camille Pissarro (1830 - 1903)
Title: Marche aux Oeufs
The Egg Market
Medium: Original etching and drypoint, circa 1902, an unsigned impression (as always), Size: 268 X 221 mms (Plate size)
Reference: Loys Delteil “Camille Pissarro: L’Oeuvre grave et lithographie” No 127
Edition: The etching plate for this work was found at the artists death never having been used. It was later struck in 1998 in an edition of only 12 proofs - a very rare item. The project was managed in a partnership between the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Our work is edition number 6/12.
