Artist Biography: Realist painter of portraits, historical- and genre scenes, landscapes and marines. He received his artistic training at the Academy of Dendermonde and at the Academy of Antwerp. He is the younger brother of painter Frans Verhas. He obtained the «Prix de Rome» in 1860. He resided in Paris in 1860 and participated at the Salons. He traveled to Italy in 1862 to visit Venice and Padua. He lived from 1863 until 1867 in Binche where he also got married. Afterwards, he moved to Brussels. He became active as a plein-airist from 1882 onward and became the leading artist for the Naturalist Style in Dendermonde. He was the founder of the School of Dendermonde.
