Landscape by Janus de Winter. Janus De Winter Bert Veenema
B Utrecht, 28 May 1882; d Den Helder, 5 Aug 1951). Dutch painter and printmaker. He began painting C. 1907 In the style of the Hague school. After 1912 his work was influenced by that of Vasily Kandinsky and the Theosophist theory of the thought form, as expounded by C. W. Leadbeater and Annie Besant. He also experimented with psychic automatism. His Expressionist landscapes depict certain moods, partly through their colour symbolism. His vegetation and animal scenes are representations of emotional sensations; the visionary portraits are often depicted in the shape of flowers, such as the orchid. Like Theo van Doesburg, Louis Saalborn (1891-1957) and Laurens van Kuik (1889-1963), he also painted aesthetic colour sensations influenced by music. His work after 1914 was influenced by Chinese painting. In 1918 he became associated with the idealistic journal Das Wort. From 1923 he lived alternately in Utrecht and Paris.
