Box veneered wood brazil antique XVII. Palazzo Micci Palazzo Micci

 General Description:

Rectangular box with domed lid, veneered wood of Brazil, all decorated surfaces of wrought iron hinges cut and nailed to decorative.

 Detailed Description:

The package consists of a core oak whose sides are assembled with dovetail. Responsible for covering food joints.
Outside the lid and side panels are covered with a veneer very likely brazil wood (Caesalpinia echinata), due to small knots characteristics that distinguish them from traditional Brazilian rosewood, also called «timber Pink. The cabinet is fully strapped with a set of iron hinges cut and nailed with spikes of small, flat head, purely decorative.
The lid has a handle grip mobile wrought iron. The hardware consists of hinges entry lock, lock, and Auberon, is wrought iron home. The curved shape of the lid is reminiscent of the great vaults of travel of the sixteenth century (which has persisted in the seventeenth century) while the pattern of lily and «wings» seen on the entry lock is traditionally associated with late reign of Louis XIV.
Inside, the fields are clad with Indian rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia). The lid has retained its valuable seal of emerald green silk, embroidered with a grid of cord with silver thread and framed by lace woven white cotton and silver plate. This should probably trim that cover the inside of the cabinet as a whole, seems to have disappeared in the other part of the box.

 Comments:

It is an object of manufacture particularly well, using exotic wood veneers both precious and expensive during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Its luxurious interior textile lining, made of silk embroidered stripes son money excessively expensive, lets give it a likely aristocratic origin. France Louis XIV period to 1710.

 State shortfalls and restorations

In a very good general state of preservation, the object is in its juice had been no restoration. It has a beautiful red patina background, deep iron. Everything is original except the ribbons holding the cover dating from the nineteenth century. Lack key, two of the four feet were nailed to the bottom and part of the fabric inner lining.

 Use Notes or annotations historical

Unlike large wooden chests carved not from the beginning of the Gothic era (see boxes & cabinet Aubasines dating from the thirteenth century), wrought iron hinges nailed on each side of the cabinet, are no longer intended to ensure the assembly and maintenance of different parts between them (bottom, sides and lid) but have a role…

Precious jewel boxes, hinged brass backdrop of velvet silk, flat lid and movable handles on the sides, are known in the seventeenth century (see «Memory Gourmande Madame de Madame de Sevigne» Editions Du Chene 1996 P. 31). The model presented in the book also shows a packing brace and textile entry lock box next to this. Their perfect geometric form, however, is slightly different (square inside a circle smaller and therefore the angles to 90, slightly beyond the circle). These models are generally valuable manufacturing Parisian.

In our case, the use of iron hinges, is more reminiscent of a regional production (probably Lorraine), although this argument is insufficient.
