The pentagram is regarded as a powerful symbol of protection and balance, with each of its five points representing one of the five elements. A star of 5 points encased in a circle, the upward point represents the spirit and the other 4 points earth, air, fire and water. In nature many flower heads and fruits exhibit a five-fold symmetry. The regular pentagram itself has the geometric proportions of the Golden Section beloved of artists since Renaissance times.
