Freedom. Ragnar Diidev Lame & Volute, By Ragnar Diidev
Liberty is a fundamental artwork in the creative universe of the blacksmith artist Ragnar Diidev.
This is a painting made in metal marquetry on wood. Two metals were used: steel and copper, with alternating shiny and corroded blades. The wood is fir saturated with 3 layers of linseed oil. No varnish covers the work.
In particular, this work represents Ragnar's freedom of choice in changing his life to become a blacksmith artist.
However, the deeper meaning of the work rests above all on the value «Freedom», the first fundamental pillar of his country France.
Freedom of expression, freedom of opinion, freedom of movement, freedom to study… Polished and shiny steel and copper strips symbolize the long and hard work that has been and is still necessary to obtain freedom, and whatever is our origin. The alternation with corroded metal strips is there to alert the viewer to the fragility of freedom: if we do not pay attention to it and let things go without fighting, then it oxidizes, corrodes and deteriorates like the unmaintained metal; difficult to shine again without difficulty: he will always wear the stigmata forever.
Like mirrors shiny metal blades also send us our own image. Deprived of brilliance and brilliance, our reflection is no more, just as we are no longer as an individual when a power deprives us of our freedoms.
As no protective varnish is applied, the owner of the work must regularly maintain its brilliance, otherwise it will tarnish and then irreparably oxidize. It is the will of the artist to make the work alive so that it carries its message.
Freedom, like glittering metal, is beautiful and requires a lot of effort and constant attention to keep it.
Ragnar Diidev dedicates this work to the men and women who throughout our history have defended our people and our culture against all forms of totalitarianism, obscurantism, single thought, dictatorship or fascism. It is also specially dedicated to the editorial team of the Charlie Hebdo Newspaper and its employees.
