The Dancers was completed in 2017 in oils on canvas and arose out of a development exercise on a Chaplinesque. Theme with Patricia Hargreaves. In common with Ian's later career work, the images are colourfully blended into a semi-abstract, almost geometric composition but on this particular occasion by partially exposing submerged layers of paint, a cracked and rustic composition emerged. The forlorn mood of the figure perfectly mirrors the shabby background creating a variable narrative with the dancers in what could be a window or poster. The black, red and gold borders add to a period Art Deco effect giving a 1920's feel to the work.
