The Gold Coast - Sunlight at the Beach on a Hot Summer’s Day. Sash Somerset-Beauverie Sash Carti Emmanuelle Somerset-Beauverie
This is intended to be an abstract painting to convey Summer happiness in the sunlight such as on a holiday on the Gold Coast renowned for its long sunny and warm Summers. I’ve been to the sunny Gold Coast three times and each time brought me happy relaxing memories and good times.

For this painting I love the strong bright colour look they achieved. I painted on my colours for the yellow area in warm light yellow mixed with white, and the darker warm yellow, to represent strong warm golden sunshine and sunlight, and brushing on the colours in big strokes with a big round hog-hair paint-brush for the colours to mix optically. I painted the sea with a small sponge brush mottling my colours of mid cobalt blue and darker ultramarine blue to mix optically. I painted all my colours in big brush strokes using a bigger round hog hair paintbrush. I took the idea for the painting the colours to mix optically from George Seurat’s Pointillism painting technique of painting dots on a canvas and allowing them to mix optically in the viewer’s eye; and from Vincent Van Gogh’s big brushstrokes using palette knives. But I wanted to individually use bigger brushstrokes rather than small dots. Using both the small palette knives, I then painted together to mix my yellow paints and blue paints while on the canvas on the horizon line where the colours meet to mix the colours into a roughly merging gradient, which resulted in an addition of a mix of green in places. I chose these colours to resemble strong vivid tropical yellows of butter yellow and golden yellow, green and blues of cobalt blue and deep ultramarine blue and ocean green-blue of a tropical deep blue Queensland sea and golden beach on the Gold Coast.
