Ship of theseus. Daniel Pinkney Daniel Pinkney

Ink on paper, 23.4 w X 16.5 h

Acrylic ink on a2 (594 X 420 mm) 250 gsm mixed media paper.

Interpretation of the thought experiment of the same name which raises the question of whether an object that has had all of its components replaced remains fundamentally the same object.

‘It is supposed that the famous ship sailed by Theseus has been kept in a harbour as a museum piece, and as the years went by some of the wooden parts began to rot and were replaced by new ones. After a century or so, all of the parts had been replaced. The question then is if the “restored” ship is still the same object as the original. ’

This thought experiment can be extrapolated to the continuity of self. Are we the same person we were when we were children? Teenagers? Where does this sense of self ‘reside’ if many of our cells are replenished many times over, during the course of an average lifepan?

The piece itself has been drawn from a small section of a wall constructed with pallet wood (relating to the wooden panels of the ship of Theseus). The knots in the wood allude to the idea of alters in mind-at-large as explored in other pieces – where self awareness comes through the spiralling in and concentration of universal consciousness. The spirals are also representative of the golden spiral as seen throughout nature.

The dark blue and greens of one of the wooden panels was a serendipitous outcome from the original photograph and makes the knots in the wood appear as galaxy formations (again, spiral and alters). The blues and greens also represent the water, sea and waves (in juxtaposition to the oranges and red of land) and tie back into the ‘Ship’ theme. The perspective nature of the piece also alludes to time and direction, and the changes we all experience flowing from past, through present, to the future.
