The arrest of Robespierre. Desiné Par F. J Harriet Gravé Par J. J. F Tassaert. Art Versailles
The engraving dates from 1794.
«The night at 10 thermidor year 2» in Paris, at Bance Marchand d'Estampes, rue Saint Denis n ° 12; Constable Merda fired a pistol at Robespierre and broke his jaw, another threw himself on Couthon.

The fall of Robespierre follows a series of events which took place from 8 Thermidor Year II (July 26.1794) around noon to 10 Thermidor (July 28). They mark the end of the Terror regime.
The day before, at noon, he climbed to the platform of the Convention and made a speech heavy with threats denouncing a “league of rascals” but without giving names.
The deputies are worried because the law of Prairial (June 10.1794) allows him to arrest and execute any suspect.
When he approaches the rostrum to speak again, Robespierre is scolded. We point the finger at the cries of: «Down with the tyrant! » In a burst of courage, a deputy, Cambon, launches his indictment from the rostrum. He was arrested along with his brother, Saint-Just, Lebas and Couthon, all members of the Committee of Public Safety (the government of France).

The prisoners were transferred to the Hôtel de Ville in Paris and found themselves under the protection of the sans-culottes, fervent supporters of the Revolution.
While the alarm is ringing, mp Barras hurries to intervene. He gathers troops and enters the Town Hall.

It is the end.
In the confusion, Robespierre was wounded in the jaw by a pistol shot. In poor condition, he was guillotined the next day, 10 Thermidor Year II (July 28.1794) with Saint-Just, Couthon and Robespierre young, his brother, as well as about twenty other partisans. The following day, some 80 other robespierrists ascend the scaffold.

Nicknamed the «Thermidorians», the deputies who dared to attack Robespierre free the suspects and put an end to the Terror while preparing for the establishment of a new regime, the Directory, which we hope will bring back the peace, order and prosperity without betraying the revolutionary gains.
