Beirut Downtown, Rainy Day. R Lawrence-Manasfi L'orientaliste

Acrylic painting over pencil sketch on canvas board.

Presented here is a unique and symbolic pencil sketch brought to life with acrylics depicting the Al-Abed Clock Tower, a popular area in downtown Beirut. This colourful scene was executed by artist Rozlynn Lawrence-Manasfi, globally recognised by her Orient flavour style of paintings.

Having got round to finally bringing the old sketch of the Rolex Clock Tower to life, the mood of the picture suggests a wet rain washed street looking toward the Al-Abed Clock Tower overshadowing the famous blue mosque, Mohammed Al-Amin with it's sparkling deep blue domes and towering minarets, a landmark in downtown Beirut and a dominant feature of Beirut's city skyline.

As you look down the pretty tree lined street in the picture we see the Rolex Clock Tower standing tall at the end surrounded by pretty lush leafy trees cascading around the famous Clock Tower and Lebanese flag flying high in front of the trees. Below on the pavement by the flag posts we see a passer-by holding a red umbrella.

Behind the Clock Tower and Blue Mosque which look golden in colour we see fragments of other city buildings to the far back of the painting.

As we cast our eye to the left side of the street we see a suggestion of the row of blue canopied cafe shops, with a couple of people under the blue canopies. Parked outside the shop units adjacent to the sidewalk stand a couple of colourful motorcycles one orange the other yellow.

The atmosphere of the street itself is fairly quiet which is wet from the rain fall, the sky is cloudy, pale blue in colour formed with yellowish clouds. In the centre of the street we see a couple arm in arm from the back view holding a large vibrant fuchsia coloured umbrella above them as they stroll towards the iconic Clock Tower.

The painting itself contains a lot of blue, purple and gold colour hues but still indicates a rainy day, the intensity and saturation of colours are the same throughout the painting which depicts city street life with a splash of romanticism. This piece is not my usual style of artwork but with this one, I challenged a different technique and style away from my comfort zone. It's always good to shake up the routine every now and then!

Brief about the Al-Abed Clock Tower and Square
The 1930’s clock bell tower is set in a square at the Place de l'Etoile, the Central District of Beirut. The clock is four faced (each side) bearing the Rolex name on the face of each clock, which is said to be gifted from Michel Abed, Lebanese-Brazilian to the Government.

The square is a recognisable icon of Beirut City popular with tourists and locals and the nearby restaurants and cafes. The square and surrounding streets are closed off to traffic.

Painting details:
The scene is presented on a superior quality canvas board painted with quality acrylics over pencil.

The size of the painting is 16 inches by 12 inches (406 X 305mm).
