An Introduction to Myself

An Introduction to Myself
I began my journey into photography many years ago. My father was a passionate amateur photographer, often contemplating turning professional. I became intrigued by his black and white photographs, so he bought me a Russian rangefinder camera, and taught me how to develop film and to make prints in his darkroom. At the age of eight I was hooked!

Over the years I have worked with photography in many fields including music photography, dance, theatre, landscape, fashion, portraiture and art photography. I've always favoured black and white and still use film in my work as well as the inevitable digital. Today my darkroom is Photoshop.

Despite the subject of my work, I have always been fascinated by great works of art and have been influenced by many more painters than other photographers. I worked for many years in museums and art galleries before turning professional as a photographer. Naturally I am influenced by great photographers such as Avedon, Bailey, Duffy and Donovan and the never to forget Bob Carlos Clarke. However, I also love British post war photojournalism especially the storytelling of Denis Thorpe and Don McPhee.

Through my work I hope to find my own freedom of expression and to tell a story, even if in words it was only to amount to a few sentences. I choose from a palette of vintage cameras and lenses to help me achieve this as well as working with digital.
