Art of Vasily Belikov
Russian Artist Vasily M. Belikov (1922-1994)

Vasily Belikov was born in a small village of Svishchevka, Province of Tambov, Russia. In the early 1930's his family left for Astrakhan, where Vasily was admitted to the Art College.
In the early 1941 he started his military service in the Navy doing his studies at United Caspian Naval Flotilla School when the Great Patriotic War began. In 1942 Vasily Belikov served as a sailor on the gunboat «Bakinsky Rabochij» in the Caspian sea. In 1943 he already fought near Novorossiysk in the battalion of Marines. Later on, he served in the Marine Monitoring and Communication Regiment in the Black Sea Fleet. He was awarded medals.
In 1947, after demobilization, Vasily Belikov arrived to Penza, Russia, and was admitted to the 3-rd year of the Penza Art College. After graduation, in 1949, he began to work in the Penza Branch of the Art Fund and from 1955 to 1961, he was its Director. A lot of his energy and health was invested into the foundation of the «House of the Artist» in Penza. When Vasily was 40, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Disabled and out of artistic shape he spent several years in various hospitals, clinics and tuberculosis sanatoriums fighting the disease. At that time, he promised himself to devote the rest of his life to Art and painting. After conquering the illness, the Artist devoted his whole self to creative work with all his passion. Since the early 1970's the artworks of Belikov were exhibited at many exhibitions throughout the country. In 1975 he became a member of the Union of Artists of ussr.
Vasily Belikov successfully created portraits and still life paintings. But his passion was always landscape. He preferred to work on plein air. The Artist was able to deeply and truthfully transfer to canvas the subtle nuances of nature preparing for rest or waking.
The artist's name is included in «a Dictionary of Twentieth Century Russian and Soviet Painters» and «World Biographical Dictionary of Artists». In the United Art Rating Vasily M. Belikov has the 4-th category.
