Peinture sur le Motif

Peinture sur le Motif
In traveling through the wilderness whether it be alpine mountains or the sagebrush desert you can always find the detritus of man in some form or another. Carrying only a brush or two and some paint, wax or oil pastel the challenge of creating something or relating an experience is laid before you in stunning silence of the unspoiled environment.
The simplicity of palette has to do with weight of course, since you are carrying all these tools for days at a time and also because I am cheap. Getting the most out of your expensive paints and mediums is tantamount to creating a permanent record of your travels while maintaining the budget to continue the journey.
A discarded piece of wood or a stolen shred of canvas from a Park Ranger’s tent will do nicely.
Sometimes a prayer flag not secured properly or a piece of wood left behind by the trail crew when their pack mule protested loudly that the load was already too heavy.
